Yesterdays game was extremely significant to the Celtics. It was win 4 of a 4 game win streak, it came against the most publicized team in the NBA the past month, our stars out played their stars and most importantly our team is now only 2 games behind Philly for the top spot in the Atlantic aka the 4 seed.
We may not be looking at a championship team, however I bet none of the "elites" Chicago or Miami would want to play the Celtics in the playoffs. The Celtics have playing in dominant fashion during this run and last night was a great team effort.
I'll start with the game, before I get into the individuals. Those who missed the game, missed a playoff like atmosphere and just a hell of game. It seems that every time we play the Knicks it comes down to a last second shot, last night was no exception.
New York rock star Jeremy Lin struggled for most of the game until the last minute where he scored 6 straight points, Rondo held him in check with 14 points (6-16 shooting), with 5 assists and 6 turnovers. During the closing of the 4th quarter, Carmelo and Pierce did their back and forth clutch thing until there was 10 seconds left and the Celtics were down 3. The 10 second play looked like many of the Celtics last second shots this year; broken. But somehow Pierce was able to shoot a 3 with 2 people in his face and dropped it in. After a Melo miss the game went into overtime.
In overtime Mr. Triple Double Rajon Rondo took over the game and had his hand in every basket scored whether it be scoring or assisting. He fed Ray Allen for a 3 and a layup and basically the game was over.
Now onto the players. If Rondo didn't have a historic game, the player of the game would have had to go to Pierce. Pierce had 34 points and was vintage. He was clutch, he outperformed Melo, and had a hell of a game. He is everything you want in Paul Pierce. Kevin Garnett struggled field goal wise (8-22) but he was aggressive, great defensively and finished with a double double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Rondo deserves his own paragraph. Rajon Rondo has been playing like a man possessed and has been sack whacking his critics (BMack and Coobs) in the dick every game. Lets start off with what he did to opposing PGs this past week, during the Bucks win he held Brandon Jennings to 6 points and 8 assists (while getting a triple double), during the Nets win he held Deron Williams (yea, the same guy who had 57 points yesterday) to 12 points and 8 assists and last night he held Jeremy Lin to 14 points, 5 assists and 6 turnovers. Last night he did something only 2 other players in NBA history have done with getting a triple double of 18 points, 17 rebounds and 20 assists. Those players are Oscar Robertson and Wilt Chamberlain. He was absolutely spectacular even though Coobs will argue that 10 of his assists and 10 of his rebounds were selfish. The only thing you could say about Rondo that wasn't great is that he missed some layups, the glass wasn't Rondo's friend, however it seemed the Celtics as a team missed 1000 layups. But Rondo was fantastic and THIS is why you don't trade him. There have been 9 triple doubles this year, Rondo has 4.
This was a great team win and this next couple weeks will be trying.
Oh yea, Pietrus said we are going to win the championship.
