The Philadelphia Eagles made a big move to bolster the middle of their defense, acquiring two-time Pro Bowl linebacker DeMeco Ryans from the Houston Texans for a fourth-round draft pick in 2012.
What a move from Philly who has had a quiet offseason thus far. DeMeco Ryans is a hell of a line backer and will help that horrific Philly linebacking core. If you guys remember Ryans was picked in the same draft as Mario Williams and established himself quicker with his play and leadership. The 27-year-old linebacker and team captain leaves Houston as the Texans' all-time leader with 637 tackles, eight sacks, six forced fumbles, eight fumble recoveries and two interceptions in his six-year career. He earned Pro Bowl honors after the 2007 and 2009 seasons and was an Associated Press All-Pro selection in 2007. He has had some injury issues, and with the emergence of Matt Cushing and Brooks Reed he only was limited to 58% of the defensive snaps last year. He will be great for Philly. As for Houston, it will be interesting to see how that defense is without Mario Williams and now Ryans.
Quarterback Alex Smith has agreed to a new three-year deal to stay with the San Francisco 49ers, sources confirmed to ESPN.com senior NFL writer John Clayton.
I was really hoping that Alex Smith would sign elsewhere so Colin Kaepernick would start. I don't care how "well" Alex Smith did last year, he sucks. The 49ers are a defensive driven team and every once in a while a QB can catch fire, that's what Smith did against the Saints. Nothing more. Alex Smith will be cut before this contract expires. It's shocking he is still on the 49ers.
