The Bard Plan

There has been so much discussion about what to do with Daniel Bard. Should he start? Should he be in the bullpen? Should he be the closer? Well, here is my opinion.

I think the Red Sox have no choice, but to start the season with him in the rotation. Sure they have a mess of other starters, but this guy has the highest upside, and you have to at least let him try. I would let him go out there and do his thing until the beginning of June. That's when Dice-K comes back. At that point you can decide if Dice-K should knock him out of the rotation, and Bard can go back to the bullpen, or whether Dice-K should knock out the 5th starter (whoever that will be, my guess Doubront).

I am on record that I don't think the Bard thing will workout, but you have brought him down this path, which you have to at least see what he's got. Worst case scenario is that you end up putting back in the pen. I just think that's the best option for now.
