The backend of the Red Sox rotation is a mess right now. Bard can't get the ball over the plate, and it seems Valentine questioning if he is a starter. Padilla is hurt, Miller is hurt, Silva is gone, Cook is progressing but probably won't be ready to start the season, Doubront seemed like he was progressing then let up 8 hits, 3 runs in a little over 4 innings which caused Bobby to question whether he has that "out" pitch".
First off, this is the Red Sox own fault. I have said it too many times, but when the Sox have a chance to throw a 1 year deal at someone like Edwin Jackson for $8 million you do it, and then you don't have all these problems, but that's the past.
I actually thought Bard's last start was a good step in the right direction. Bard allowed three runs, three hits and three walks in five innings. He retired his last eight batters and 12 of his final 14. I know that doesn't sound like the greatest thing, but he only pitched 1 bad inning, and was able to keep his velocity up during the whole 83 pitch appearance (between 94-96 during his final inning). Am I sold he is a starter? Not at all, but I do think they have to come out of the gate with him. You can always switch him back to the bullpen later in the season if it doesn't workout.
I really, really don't want Aceves in the rotation. He was so important to that bullpen last year, and I want him back there not just pitching every 5 days. So for now I would have my 4/5 starters as Bard and Doubront. If either fails then Cook will be ready to go and can be plugged in. With that done, you can add Miller, Aceves, and Padilla to the rotation. Paddila and Aceves will be multiple inning guys, so if guys go down in the rotation they can fill in as well. I think this is their best option right now. Bard and Doubront have the most upside in my opinion.
