Braves announced that Chipper Jones will retire following the 2012 season. I will miss Chipper Jones, I have always been a fan. He has had a hell of a career and has a very good chance at being a Hall of Famer. His career has been trending down, but at age 39 it should, and yet he still was able to bat .275 with 18 HRs and 70 RBIs. If there is a player that deserves a victory lap it's Chipper, now he will get a standing ovation in every park he plays in all season, as all MLB fans get to say goodbye.
Quick view of his career highlights from Wiki...
The Sporting News Rookie of the Year Award (1995)
World Series champion (1995)
Players Choice Award NL Outstanding Rookie 1995
7× All-Star (1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2008, 2011)
2× Silver Slugger Award winner (1999, 2000)
NL MVP (1999)
Players Choice Award NL Outstanding Player 1999
NL Batting Champion (2008)
NL Player of the Week (June 2–8, 2008)
Highest On Base Percentage with .470 (2008)
8 consecutive 100+ RBI seasons (1996–2003)
Holds the Major League record for most consecutive games with an extra-base hit (14; tied with Paul Waner).
If he makes the Hall of Fame he would be only behind Mickey Mantle (536) and Murray (504) for HRs by a switch hitter (Jones has 454 so far). Jones career line is amazing .304/.402/.533, and has more walks (1455) than strikeouts (1358). I hope he is able to cap off his career with one more solid year, because like I said, he deserves it.
