Susan Slusser of the Chronicle reports Wednesday the A's are likely to sign Ramirez just before or soon after the start of spring training.
I guess in a way it makes sense. If you give Manny a minor league deal, you can bring him to camp, see if he has anything left, and if he doesn't then you can cut him and basically not lose anything. If he somehow works out the A's can wait till he is done his suspension (50 games), showcase him and see if they can get anything from him at the trade deadline.
Personally, I still wouldn't do it. Manny is such a headache, and with a team full of young guys, this might not be the best guy to have around the clubhouse.
